Sport
Sport is an integral part of life at Charnwood College. The importance of sport at our school encompasses more than just the benefits of physical activity. It increases self-esteem, highlights the importance of teamwork and engages and motivates young people.
Whether it is supporting the running and organisation of a local event, competing against other schools or at high-profile David Ross Education Trusts sports tournaments (in front of sporting royalty like Sir Steve Redgrave and Rebecca Adlington), our students consistently show what sport means to them. Competing in high-quality fixtures, sports tours in Europe, funded trips to major tournaments, bursaries and scholarships, all form part of the outstanding sporting provision at Charnwood College. The School is arguably the best basketball institute in the country winning six national titles and world titles in both boys and girls categories. The School has a unique partnership with the Riders Basketball professional club, which allows sixth form students to not only gain a Level 3 Diploma in Basketball but to have up to 16 hours training per week, alongside strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, diet and nutritional support. The academy also offers an elite player pathway in football and netball within the sixth form.
Our facilities include:
- a sports centre
- 2 sports halls
- 1 multi-gym
- 1 flood-lit multi use games area (MUGA)
- a flood-lit, all-weather 3G sports pitch
- a gym
- extensive playing fields.
We place great emphasis on developing students’ leadership abilities, with sixth formers coaching younger students and taking part in the Sports Leadership Awards programme.
The department, which runs a Basketball Academy in association with Leicester Riders, has nurtured many young sports men and women who have gone on to a professional career in playing or coaching sport.
Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide choice of extra-curricular sports clubs and competitions at all levels, as well as the highly popular annual school sports day.
Charnwood caters for a broad range of sports, from volleyball to athletics, badminton, cricket, cross-country running, football, netball, rounders, rowing, rugby, swimming and tennis.
