Charnwood jubilant at DRET Spring Cup

Charnwood College students have been celebrating after taking home a number of titles at the DRET Spring Cup 2017.

After a challenging tournament, Charnwood’s U13 Hockey Team won the Plate competition, whilst the U13 Rugby 7’s team also secured the winning title.

Due to their fantastic efforts and the commitment shown throughout the contest, Charnwood College students were also delighted to receive the Sporting Progress Award.

Supported by Olympic gold medallist Crista Cullen, and former England rugby star Chris Jones, the Trust’s most talented rugby and hockey players were brought together to compete in the event which was held at the University of Nottingham.

Not put off by the challenging weather conditions, which included heavy rain and hail, every student played their part with pride and passion.

Both sporting heroes were extremely impressed with the talent showcased throughout the day.

Crista Cullen praised the event for giving young people the chance to take part in competitive sport. She commented: “I think it is so important for elite athletes to be in the grassroots, hitting the masses and events like the DRET Spring Cup are a great way to do that.

“We’ve seen a 50% increase in the number of people playing hockey on the back of Team GB’s success in Rio. We don’t want this momentum to end.

“It is fantastic to see talented young people progressing, being inspired to pick up a hockey stick for the very first time or developing their talents to reach the next level. Congratulations to everyone that took part in this event.“

The annual event is an incredible opportunity for sports enthusiasts to progress and compete against other teams. The tournament helps to give students a focus, to build their game and challenge themselves through sporting events.

Shane Ward, Sports Enrichment Manager at the David Ross Education Trust, said: “The sporting talent we have seen at Charnwood College and the progress they have made over recent months is incredible.

“The students competed with such passion and represented the academy with pride.

“I have no doubt that they will continue to celebrate success during future sporting events.”
