Charnwood College Riders claim Under-18 National Basketball Cup

The Charnwood College Riders have been crowned worthy winners of the National Basketball League (NBL) U18 Mens’ National Cup.

The Under-18 boys’ basketball squad, who attend Loughborough’s Charnwood College, which is part of the David Ross Education Trust, claimed the prestigious title at Worcester Arena on Saturday.

The Riders dominated the competition from the outset and showcased an impressive performance from both ends of the floor, as the team went on to beat rivals Manchester Magic 89-59.

Throughout the match, Charnwood’s Hosana Kitenge limited the opposition’s Michael Anuba, to just 14 points in order to seal a well-deserved victory.

Hosana went off for 24 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 blocks on 10-for-16 shooting, as Charnwood faced little resistance after pulling away in the second period.

Zak-Blue Shagourie also added 16 points in 16 minutes for Charnwood, with Blaize Sagna and David Likinyo securing 11 and 10 respectively.

Following the match, Hosana said: “That was a great experience. We were all well prepared and ready to play.

“I felt a little hesitant to start, but I knew that good things would come once the game began and I had the chance to build up my confidence.”

Wil Maynard, Head Coach of the Charnwood College Riders boys’ squad, said: “It was an amazing day for our boys, we did a great job! We saw some standout performances from Hosana, but also from Niall Harris on the defensive end.

“We had a game plan and the boys stuck together to deliver this. All of the players brought exactly what I wanted into the game, leading to this incredible result for the squad.”

As part of the David Ross Education Trust, Charnwood College is committed to supporting talented athletes, by encouraging them to work hard and be inspired to achieve the very highest levels then can.
